In 1985 it is founded the Cultural Organization by a group of actors, writers and plastic artists with the goal of researching the Art of Puppetry. In July 1985 it’s premiered the first production: “D. Quixote e Sancho Pança” by António José da Silva in the ACARTE room / Modern Art Centre.

Having in mind the goal of contribute to the innovation of aesthetic and technique of puppetry, the Puppetry Theatre has produced the following plays: “O Romance da Raposa” by Aquilino Ribeiro, “Auto da Barca do Inferno” and “Auto da Índia” by Gil Vicente, “Histórias de Hakim” by Norberto Ávila, “História Tragico-Marítima” by Bernardo Gomes de Brito, “A Travessia” a traditional story, “A Dama de Pé-de-Cabra” by Alexandre Herculano, “Histórias Contadas” fables of La Fontaine adapted by Joaquim Pedro Ferreira, “Cid” by José Ramalho from the text “Cantar de Mio Cid” and “A Torre do Mar” by Joaquim Pedro Ferreira and José Ramalho.

The have participated in several national and international Theatre Festivals.

The have made several international tours to Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, Greece and the Tcheck Republic.

In 1986 they received the price of the Portuguese Association of Theatre Critics by the excellent work developed and by the innovations used.

The nominee for Best Show to Child and Youth (Auto da Barca do Inferno) in the Garrett Prizes. Since 1993, in collaboration with Lisbon’s City Hall, they developed the project located in the Av. República, 103-B, in which they will set up an Auditorium, a Formation Centre and a Documentation Centre.

is the founder of the Portuguese Puppetry Group / National Centre of UNIMA – Union Internationale de la Marionette.
